Stuff to do Summer 2018 in Birmingham.

Finally we’re starting to see a little summer peeking through after a winter that just didn’t want to end. So what can we do to make the most of it before we hit the long dark nights and round the clock heating again? We have a few ideas…

Ever been to an outdoor cinema?
Apparently these are becoming quite the trend. Outdoor cinematic events have been gaining popularity the last few years and there’s a variety not only in Birmingham but surrounding areas. A few this year include Rogue One at Twycross Zoo, The Lion King at Rushall Olympic Football Club in Walsall and the Greatest Showman in Moseley.

What if it rains? Unless the weather is forecast to be torrential or too windy they won’t be cancelled. Though you should check the weather a couple of hours before going. If the weather will be wet then take a camping chair and waterproofs rather than a picnic blanket to avoid ruining the experience.

So many festivals!
Birmingham plays host to numerous festivals each year, many of which are during the summer months.

Colmore Food Festival will be held at Victoria Square for two days from 6th July 2018. There will be live cooking demos, entertainment, cocktail masterclasses, wine tasting and low priced dishes from local venues.

Apparently Digbeth Dining Club is a festival, though it’s open every week Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You can get a variety of food from the best local street food vendors at Lower Trinity Street. If you’re not sure, check out their twitter page @DigbethDiner, it’s pretty impressive!

Keep your eyes peeled for other events such as Wing Fest, Hummus Festival and Caribbean Festival, Fine and Meat Festival and Pizza and Prosecco Festival.

Many of the food festivals go hand with opportunities to try an assortment of drinks. However, there are a couple of festivals dedicated to drinks, including Birmingham Cocktail Weekend and Rum Festival.

Try some new places
Spring and Summer 2018 are proving to be quite eventful in regards to new places to eat and drink, in particular Temple Street. In March and April Revolucion de Cuba and The Ivy opened respectively, and we are now awaiting a craft beer pub The Head of Steam to open.
Of course there will be some new businesses popping up all over Birmingham. Some of which include an expansion of Loki’s Wine with a second site in Edgbaston whilst coffee shop Sorrento Lounges will open a new branch in Moseley.

Ice cream tour… or checklist
Trying all of the ice creams and gelatos the city has to offer in one day may be a task, but who wants to eat that much sugar in one day eh? However if you frequent enough pedestrianised areas in Birmingham perhaps you should search for your favourite go to frozen snack.

Joe Delucci in Grand Central has some pretty spectacular gelato flavours; fruits of the forest, cherries and custard, rum and raisin and an assortment of tropical fruits. And you can sit on scooter-style seats instead of stools, how ace is that?!

Paradice Gelateria is a family run business in Harborne that makes gelato fresh on site using real fruits and organic milk. You can buy cups, tubs or cones, have it added to a waffle, crepé or brioche bun or buy it as a sundae, and there are flavour combinations for children or grown-ups. Also you can buy some lunch, a hot drink or a smoothie if you fancy.

Super Bubble Waffle in Grand Central offers a mix of Chinese and Western influences and an assortment of options. Ice cream is served with homemade egg waffles formed of bubble shapes that are filled with fruits. The flavours include Mr. Oreo, Strawberry Queen and Super Berry. And if you don’t feel like a sweet treat, they also serve a lunch option of cheese and ham… without the berry filled bubbles.

So the Cookie Dough stall in Birmingham is clearly in the cookie business rather than ice cream, but they’re so amazing they have to be mentioned. Though there is the unrefusable option to add fresh ice cream to the cookie dough.

Of course there are many other places around the city to try ice cream and gelato including the numerous restaurants on offer, cinemas and snack vans.

Well there you have it. There are many other things on offer to either inhabitants or visitors to Birmingham, but we hope this makes a useful start.
